The Popdust Files: beyonce
Washington, Lincoln, Roosevelt, Knowles. Residents in Beyoncé’s hometown of Houston, Texas are hoping to add her name to the list of America’s great tourist attractions by constructing a monument dedicated to her greatness. We all have our idols, and who’s to say the Charging Bull in New York’s Financial District really resonates with you? According to Fox’s Houston affiliate, Marcus Mitchell and Steve White of Armdeonce Ventures are currently working on securing a public setting for “The Beyoncé Knowles Monument Project,” to honor the singer’s professional accomplishments with Destiny’s Child and as a solo star. The team is hoping to create a massive hall that will display emblems from her career as well as a fashion wing, largely populated with House of Deréon designs—and curated by Miss Tina, we’d imagine. Projecting Part One of her Live At Roseland DVD onto a white wall would also work for us.
“Our biggest thing is a lot of people get honored when they die, so our goal is to why not honor people why they’re still here? We felt as though it’s her time to be honored,” Mitchell explained. Apparently having a child bumps you up a few notches on the Deserving Of A Shiny Building In Your Name waiting list. “We’ve gotten support from the city of Houston, from the mayor,” he added. The pair is waiting on the private funding necessary to begin construction, but if all goes according to plan, their dream should come to fruition in time for Bey’s birthday on Sept. 4. Proceeds from the monument will go to Music for America, Beyonce’s Survivor foundation and the Grammy Cares foundation.
Obviously this is and will be disputed by those who think there are more deserving Texans to money on—Chamillionaire! Tim Riggins! But Justin Bieber already has a street named after him in The Lone Star State, and he’s–gasp—Canadian. Considering Beyoncé (hopefully) knows the difference between the original Ninfa’s and its less delicious locations, has 16 more Grammy Awards to her name and has popularized a string of shout-outs to the Bayou City, might as well cast her head in bronze. Oh, fandom. Such a funny thing.
